FOOTLOOP

FootLoop
Bridging traditional footwear heritage with zero-waste 3D printing and biodegradable materials.
BENEFITS
True circular lifecycle
Engineered entirely with Balena’s advanced biodegradable materials, the shoe is designed to safely decompose at the end of its life, achieving a genuine zero-waste cycle.
Tradition meets innovation
The design successfully translates the aesthetic and structural familiarity of classic shoemaking, honoring Framas’s deep heritage, into a cutting-edge additive manufacturing format.
Adhesive-free, stitched construction
The process completely eliminates the need for toxic glues. Instead, the 3D-printed components are assembled using traditional mechanical stitching, reducing the environmental footprint while honoring classic craftsmanship.

BRIEF

PROJECT BRIEF
Presented at Milan Design Week 2025 and recognized by the prestigious ADI Design Museum in Milan, Footloop was conceived in collaboration with Balena and Framas to tackle one of the footwear industry’s most critical challenges: end-of-life waste. The objective was to design a shoe that completely closes the lifecycle loop. The unique challenge lay in merging radically sustainable technology—zero-waste 3D printing using Balena’s compostable materials—with the aesthetic language and comfort of traditional footwear, leveraging Framas’s historic manufacturing expertise.
METHODOLOGY
Methodology
The workflow is entirely driven by “Design for Circularity” (DfC) and “Design for Additive Manufacturing” (DfAM), focusing on the environmental impact of every geometric decision. Key phases include:

01
Lifecycle mapping
Evaluating the environmental footprint from digital conceptualization to physical decomposition to ensure a genuine zero-waste cycle.
02
Material calibration
Adapting our 3D modeling techniques to deeply integrate the specific flexural, tensile, and printing properties of Balena’s biodegradable polymers.
03
Heritage translation
Designing a recognizable, traditional silhouette that honors classic shoemaking while being fully optimized for a single-material additive manufacturing process.
04
Prototyping
Iterative digital and physical testing to ensure structural integrity and comfort without relying on standard multi-part assembly.
05
Handcrafted assembly
Meticulously engineering wall thicknesses and structural geometries to allow for manual assembly and traditional stitching, completely eliminating the use of glues for a 100% adhesive-free construction.
