BRIEF

PROJECT BRIEF

To validate and maximize the efficacy of the new Paris 2024 Olympic track, the project scope expanded to include a fully parametric track system to evaluate the physical interaction between athletic footwear and track surfaces. The objective was to create a robust workflow capable of generating automatic FEA mesh outputs from variable input parameters like hexagonal cavity depth and spacing. By establishing a comprehensive multi-layer simulation setting, the studio aimed to accurately analyze stable pin penetrations, large track deformations, and overall kinetic energy transfer, ensuring a unified, high-performance mechanical system.

METHODOLOGY

Methodology

The workflow expanded from pure footwear simulation to macro-surface engineering, focusing heavily on the physical interaction between the track and the athlete. Key phases include:

01

Surface analysis

Evaluating the mechanical properties, force distribution, and grip limitations of existing track textures.

02

Concept generation

Utilizing computational tools to design a dynamic, mathematically modifiable pattern for the running surface.

03

Parametric implementation

The conceptual pattern is translated into a scalable 3D structure, utilizing parametric logic to dictate localized stiffness and micro-geometry across the track.

04

Virtual simulation

Advanced digital environments are set up to evaluate the track’s structural integrity, mechanical response, and energy return under extreme athletic loads.

05

interaction testing

Simulating the precise mechanical engagement between customized spiked footwear and the track’s new geometry to optimize grip and power transfer.

TECHNICAL FOCUS

Technical Focus

The core technical challenge involved managing the mesh optimization for a multi-layered impact simulation. The studio utilized custom parametric floor definitions to generate a hexagonal bottom layer cavity structure, enabling rapid iteration of the track’s geometry. During the simulation, the focus shifted to tracking the exact penetration of titanium spikes into the finishing layer, using LS DYNA to resolve large deformations and evaluate the resulting energy displacement across the track’s bi-material components. The ultimate validation of this computational approach was its successful physical manifestation and utilization on the global stage at the Paris 2024 Olympics, providing a state-of-the-art stage for world-class athletes.
