Next-Gen Climbing Shoes

Next-Gen Climbing Shoes
Challenging the status quo of climbing footwear through advanced FEA simulation.
BENEFITS
Challenging the status quo
By questioning one of the most static footwear architectures in the industry, the project proved that even the most minimal designs can benefit from targeted computational intervention.
Targeted biomechanical support
The integration of a specialized micro-plate provides high-level structural support exactly where the foot experiences the most intense pressure, drastically reducing fatigue on micro-holds.
Maintained sensitivity
Simulation confirmed that the traditional overall morphology remains highly effective. The localized intervention enhances power transfer without compromising the essential tactile feedback required on the wall.
Data-driven validation
Subjective feel was translated into objective data, mapping the precise distribution of forces during high-tension edging and smearing maneuvers.

BRIEF

PROJECT BRIEF
Driven by the team’s deep-rooted passion for climbing, this internal R&D project was born from a simple question: is there still room for innovation in climbing footwear? For years, the climbing shoe has remained the ultimate minimal tool, relying on traditional, largely unaltered geometries. The objective was to push this static state-of-the-art architecture to its limits using advanced computational methods, observing its physical behavior under extreme tension to see if modern simulation could uncover blind spots in a seemingly perfected design.
METHODOLOGY
Methodology
The workflow shifted the studio’s advanced digital simulation pipeline from dynamic impact to static load distribution and extreme torsional forces. Key phases include:
01
Biomechanical mapping
Analyzing the specific load transfers climbers generate on micro-holds and varied rock textures.
02
FEA application
Simulating extreme stress conditions to evaluate how the traditional minimal structure distributes forces across the foot.
03
Form validation
Digital testing confirmed that the baseline morphology of the standard climbing shoe is already highly optimized for its purpose.
04
Micro-plate integration
Micro-plate integration: Based on the FEA mapping, a rigid micro-plate was engineered and digitally inserted exclusively into the critical stress zones to amplify support without altering the shoe’s proven shape.
TECHNICAL FOCUS
Technical Focus
The technical core of the project relied on rigorous Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to simulate the extreme biomechanical demands of climbing, particularly during edging maneuvers on minimal footholds. By mapping the exact strain areas and critical compression forces, the digital model revealed that while the traditional shoe geometry is exceptionally efficient, the peak stress vectors lacked structural counter-support. Rather than redesigning the entire shoe, computational design was used to generate a targeted micro-plate. This insert acts as a localized stiffener, absorbing and redistributing the intense point-loads, thereby enhancing performance while strictly preserving the minimal, second-skin nature of the footwear.
